It could look like a different type of transit app with a little work. Instead of thinking of it as not looking like a subway or LRT map, think of it like the background grid of busses and streetcars of the TTC in Toronto.

One of the TTCs claims to fame is the grid covering both time and, more importantly, space, which makes the whole city accessible via transit.

We just need some gaps filled (both small and large) and then we have a grid.

That's very common in China except there's a concrete divider preventing cars from entering the bike lane.
